Ed Hale Introduces a New Project – PeaceWithIran.com

“I am very glad to hear about what Ed Hale is doing. It’s of extraordinary importance. The threats by the US against Iran are not only criminal — technically, in violation of the UN Charter — but are also extremely ominous. I don’t think there can be an invasion, but bombing is possible, and a terrible prospect. On the likelihood, no one can say, even the White House. It depends in no small part on our efforts.”

A personal message from Ed Hale

As many know, I just recently returned from a 15 day peace delegation to the country of Iran. The trip was eye-opening to say the least. It was also exhausting. Hence my absence over the last two months since my return. Had to get my head on straight. I have written hundreds of pages about the experience and yes as always I have gigabytes of video footage and photos to share. This will come in time.

In the intervening weeks since my return I have been more than busy. Besides countless interviews and lectures regarding the recent Iranian trip, the band is in the midst of signing a two album deal with Caroline/EMI Records to release out two new albums this year, so yes to all of your gracious and much-appreciated inquiries, the new albums are going to be released. As soon as we have a release date we will let you know. I have also been finishing a book which we will announce very soon.

I have also been busy with two new non-profit projects, www.TuneInTurnOnHelpOut.org, and www.PeaceWithIran.com. Your presence here is welcomed and appreciated. And it would be greatly appreciated at both or either of these two new sites, which both have noble goals. To speak a bit about the impetus of the peacewithiran.com project, I want to caveat by saying that though “war is imminent” or “military strikes are imminent” may be an idea or thought or belief that many are carrying around today in regards to the United States and Iran and even Israel, I do not personally hold this thought or idea or belief myself.

Yes I certainly see the news being released everyday about the various issues, and I recognize that parties on all sides feel very passionate about these issues; whether it is the threat of a “nuclear Iran” on one side, or a ”bullying America” on the other side, or a “fearful and hostile Israel” on yet another side. I also certainly understand the potential dangers that all three countries pose against the others and truly against all living beings on the planet today. But I believe that what we think about, what we give energy to, is what we create. We have seen it time and time again. As soon as a country starts beating its war drum, it is only a matter of time until it decides it’s time to “go to war.” Regardless of the loss of life, liberty, respect in the world community, or the burden it places upon the rest of the world. Throughout human history, there has always been one country or another “ready to attack” another country.

The truth of the matter is that this is bound to continue until mass human consciousness changes to the point of what might be called “critical mass” in a way that these people who see “war” as the only answer for “peace” simply no longer exist. In time this will be our reality. It might take our total annihilation and extinction and subsequent reincarnation in yet another form for this to happen, but let us hope not. Let us hope that those of us who see “peaceful means” as the only means available to us to achieve “peace” win this historical battle of wits that is being played out on the world stage.

With that said, let us take it for granted that for the next few months or years even we will have ample opportunity to read about “war” and the “threat of war” in regards to Iran and the United States and Israel if we so choose to. There are plenty of people who find the time and enjoy searching for the latest article or report on what “so and so” said bad about “so and so” and of course in the end it is really nothing but talk leading up to more “war” – even if their intentions are good – meaning that they don’t want “war” – but in fact that is exactly what they will create. Some people have just not evolved to the level of understanding of the “mechanisms of consciousness” yet to the degree that they realize that if they spend all their time thinking and reading about it, they will indeed create it. Whether they claim to want it or not. They are creating it simply by focusing so much attention on it.

But that is not what this particular website is concerned with. Our goals with the www.PeaceWithIran.com website is to show an entirely different side of US/Iran relations and to the country of Iran itself, and the Iranian people. The idea is to literally ignore that pink elephant in the room that at various times is called “war” or “threats of war” or worries or concerns about nuclear energy programs or WMDs or any of that lower-mode primitive-minded nonsense. Because God knows we have plenty of people already giving plenty of energy to those ideas in today’s world.

Remember elementary school? There were always those one or two kids in each class who were the bullies, who picked fights for the slightest reason or for no reason at all, who made fun of other kids, who tried to make us laugh at the expense of others, who tried to pit one classmate against another for the sheer wicked enjoyment they got out of it. Though this isn’t elementary school anymore, it sure seems like it sometimes. Those kids have now grown up. And if we aren’t careful and vigilant to our cause – the safety and survival of our species – these grown up kids could blow us all up simply because they haven’t fully matured yet as most of us have, and also because we haven’t done enough to speak up and tell them to back the fuck down.

It’s too bad we weren’t able to do that in regards to the United States Government’s invasion of the sovereign country of Iraq. Lord knows plenty of people from all over the world tried. But no one was brave enough to really stand up and say “no.” And so in the last five years we have watched in horror over one million innocent people die. It is also equally regrettable that we have thus far been unable to stand up against the Chinese government in regards to how they are slowly but steadily killing hundreds of thousands of Sudanese people right before our eyes.

Of course, the issue of Iran is a bit more complex than Iraq or the Sudan. Both countries were radically unstable and not much of a threat nor a strong foe to begin with. But Iran is a very different matter. The people of the United States of America should feel very lucky that the Iranian people are such a strong, busy, and resilient people that up until this time they have not taken the constant beating of the American war drum by the few barbarians in Washington who do not understand the basic principles of diplomacy too seriously. Instead they choose to just continue on with their lives and hope that eventually America finds someone else to bully. For unlike Iraq or the Sudan or Tibet for that matter, Iran does have the potential to pose a serious threat as a formidable enemy if they ever felt so inclined to. Not only do they have a very proud and loyal populace since their own revolution, they also have the backing and allegiance of many other countries around the world. Luckily for all of us, they instead choose to do their best to just keep on trying to move forward with their day to day lives.

So instead of focusing on war and threats of war and who has the biggest army or the biggest guns or who said what about whom each day in the international press, those of us on the light side need to start focusing our energy on Peace and on People. After all, Iranis a country full of people. So is the United States. And in a nutshell, war isn’t good for people. Nor has it ever done much good for “peace”.

It is easy to find ourselves upset at the US Government, just as it is easy to find ourselves upset with the Iranian government or the Israeli government or the various factions within the Palestinian government. But it isn’t going to do us much good to focus on these feelings of upset. Let us instead choose to focus on Peace itself. Let us instead focus on discovering how many millions of Iranian/Americans we already have living here in the United States who still have family “back home” in beautiful Iran. Let us instead develop a curiosity for this rich and ancient and historic land once called Persia, now called Iran.

Let us instead develop a place online and in our hearts where we who care can share photos, films, books, movies, art, and music from the fascinating cultural exchange that is taking place right this very minute between our two great countries. Iranians love Americans. There is much to like about us. And they can see that. And though many don’t yet know it, Americans love many famous Iranians. Iran has contributed much to the planet in its five thousand year history. Our very own Constitution is said to be inspired by the Persian King Cyrus the Great and his drafting of what many believe to be the very first “constitution.”

PeaceWithIran.com is a story of hope. It is a place to learn and to share. The goal being to add some balance to the already nauseating clutter of war-related stories coming out from the hawks and bullies of the world – and the hapless media lapdogs who follow their every step. We made a grave mistake with Iraq. We never bothered to even look these poor people in the eye before we attacked them; because our hearts were heavy from the events of September 11th, and our minds were confused by falsified “intelligence reports” coming out of Washington. But we will not make that same mistake again.

Let us take a look at the face of Iran – since after all, Iran is a country full of 70 million faces. Our goal is that not one of them is touched, hurt, injured, attacked, maimed, deformed, put out of their homes, or killed by anyone. Just as I am sure most would agree that we have that same exact goal for ourselves. Let us hold it for our Iranian neighbors as well. (In fact, why don’t we just presume to hold that same goal for all of our neighbors on the planet… and yeah that might mean demanding that China give Tibet back to the Tibetans and stop murdering Sudanese people before we even think about entertaining their hosting this year’s Olympic Games. Just a thought.)

In the meantime, there is much to learn about that truly fascinating people and country of Iran. Take your time and look around the site. If you have something to share, please feel free to. This site is open to all who have something to contribute, even if it is just a photo, a comment, or a message of hope or inspiration. Most of all, share the space in your hearts that we finally acheive that seemingly ever evasive goal of peace not just in words and rhetoric but in actual practice.

Sincerely,
Ed Hale

ED HALE TRANSCENDS IRANIAN CONFLICT – ROCK STAR AND GOOD WILL AMBASSADOR TO VISIT IRAN

Monday, February 25th, 2008
by Keith Hannaleck
Transcendence lead singer Ed Hale has been chosen to be one of 14 delegates going on a Peace Delegation to the country of Iran with The Fellowship of Reconciliation.
New York, NY, Feb 25, 2008 – 14 delegates chosen from across the United States will be going on a Peace Delegation to the country of Iran with The Fellowship of Reconciliation, the world’s oldest peace organization headquartered in over 40 countries worldwide and started in 1914 in Switzerland to prevent war in Europe. College radio darling Ed Hale, lead singer for the rock group Transcendence has been chosen to be one of the 14 delegates.
Along with 10 others the group also consists of writer Larry Beinhart, best known for his infamous book turned movie Wag the Dog and Searching for Truth in the Land of Spin, Carah Lynn Ong, Policy Analyst for the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation in Washington DC, and journalist Robert Dreyfus, contributing editor and writer for The Nation, Rolling Stone, and The New Republic. The group will tour Iran for two-weeks, primarily focusing on the major cities of Tehran, Esfehan, Shiraz, and Qom and holding formal meetings with the country’s leading government and religious leaders in an unprecedented move since the Islamic revolution almost 30 years ago to discuss US/Iranian relations. The group of 14 Americans will also visit schools, universities, newspapers, radio, and TV stations to foster more peace, harmony, and solidarity between the American and Iranian people.
They will meet with three reigning Ayatollahs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to the United States, the Minister of Culture, and with the former two-term Iranian President Mohamad Khatami. The Fellowship of Reconciliation is a non-religious, not-for-profit organization that has been sponsoring trips such as these for over eighty years all over the world. Their primary mission is to foster peace and understanding between peoples of different cultures during times of high conflict in order to attempt to prevent war.
Ed Hale is the lead singer in the rock band Transcendence (Universal) and is also known for his outspoken human rights and peace activism and volunteer work around the world. He just returned from two weeks of home building in Africa with Habitat for Humanity (see YouTube) and made two separate trips to the Gulf Coast last year to help rebuild homes for Hurricane Katrina victims in Biloxi, Mississippi. He and his bandmates have two new albums coming out this year, The Great Mistake, and All Your Heroes Become Villains.
An interesting sign of the times, the funds to help pay Hale’s expenses were raised entirely online using social networking sites such as MySpace, the band’s fanbase, and something known as the ChipIn widget. Fans and friends were encouraged to post comments and donate anything they wanted to. The “widget” tracked the progress in real-time so all could log-on at anytime to see how much money had been collected and watch as the goal was reached and read comments from fans from around the world.
Hale has been keeping a blog about the trip online and will continue to post reports while he is in Iran. Upon his return he will be speaking at various events around the country about the experience and will be available for television and press interviews about the experience.

EARLY ED HALE TV VIDEO FOOTAGE FOUND

Thanks to an external hard drive found by longtime Transcendence graphics guru Eduardo Silva, a batch of previously thought lost forever video files have surfaced, some nearly twenty years old, featuring a very young Ed Hale, aka Eddie Darling. This post includes a local Miami newscast on Channel 6 circa 1988. Featuring Ed Hale and his fellow bandmates in Broken Spectacles when they were still in college and other South Florida alumni such as Matthew Sabatella and Jim Camacho.

SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND: ED HALE MUSIC & THE MEANING OF IT ALL

Ed Hale New York, NY

WASHINGTON SQUARE NEWS

New York, NY

by Meera Subramanian

Ed Hale is warming up over a steaming cup of Dunkin Donuts decaf. He talks about, among other things, his weekly schedule (French language lessons one night, kickboxing classes another), his ambitions for a reality television show where he interviews a famous Bishop and other random people, his novel in progress entitled The Cosmos is Great and Large, Darn Right, (“like Huck Finn with superheroes”), and about the Army General’s uniform that hangs in his closet.  Dressed in black fitted jeans, a black DKNY shirt, and black boots, he slips easily into the New York City landscape, recently transplanted from his native Florida.  His curly, shoulder-length brown hair is pushed back from his face with a pair of dark sunglasses, also DKNY, and his heavy-lidded blue eyes are eager as he talks about everything and everyone that gets him excited, punctuating his explorations with an easy laugh and expressive stretching out of words like “brilll-yant!”  This is all on decaf, remember.

But Ed Hale is, by profession, a rock musician.  Lead singer of the band originally named Ed Hale and the Troubadours of Transcendence, shortened to Transcendence by fans that filled Miami venues.  Singer-songwriter, guitar and keyboard player, Hale’s sound is reminiscent of Bowie, U2, and the Beatles blended with a unique world-beat undercurrent.  His music has been described by reviewers alternately as lush, original, bland, well-crafted, perverted, mildly entertaining, and hauntingly familiar yet futuristic.

By no means a music critic, I hear good ole rock ‘n’ roll, heavy on guitars and drums, with a solid driving beat.  A few of the tracks on Transcendence’s third album, Nothing is Cohesive, which is being released this month, slow down more than usual and become a dreamy mix —  love songs to Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso, or Hale’s own sense of becoming.

Ed Hale is a work-in-progress, a man evolving.  It’s easy to forget that music is even Hale’s first passion, what with all his talk about emerging consciousness and revolution.  And money.  And women.  Oh, and religion too.  Not necessarily in that order.

He says: “honestly, seriously, everyone thinks I’m thirty,” but the faint lines on his high forehead and smile lines around his mouth reveal a few more years.  He’s old enough to have become established as a world renowned musician as well as in other more practical realms.  “My non-capitalist days are behind me.  I’m a capitalist,” he says off-handedly. “I own companies.”  Was it four, or five that he mentioned?  Vitamins.  Real estate. A record company.  “I believe in social responsibility,” he says, but he drives around in a convertible BMW.  “I dig that stuff.  That’s why we have America.  It doesn’t mean that you don’t give.”  And he does give.  One friend, Kerri Huckabee, remembers learning that Hale was sponsoring kids in need all over the world and cutting checks to numerous churches and charities each Christmas.  “He didn’t even mention it.  He just does it.  We go out to dinner and then drive around town looking for a homeless person to give the leftovers.  And then Ed gives them money too. That’s how he is.”

Getting Radical

It was in this spirit that Hale sought out protest leaders of the anti-globalist movement when they arrived in Miami in 2003 to oppose the Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement.  He’d watched the 1999 WTO protests on television and been inspired enough to write the song, “The Journey (A Call to Arms)” from the band’s 2002 album Rise and Shine that he describes as a wake-up call for his generation.”   He walked into the makeshift welcome center of the protest movement, where organizers from groups such as United for Peace and Justice, SmartMeme, and the Citizens Trade Council were scrambling with limited resources to organize thousands of people. “I’m wearing shiny pants and my hair’s all coiffed,” Hale recalls.  “I said, ‘I want to help you. What do you need?’”   He offered the headquarters of TMG Records (one of his companies) for the week, located in one of the buildings he owns.  They moved in and set up shop.

“I expect rock stars to be assholes,” explained Patrick Reinsborough of San Francisco-based SmartMeme, “But Ed Hale was quite an angel, and he’s got CDs!  He sounds like Bono!”  Hale set up the new Media

ConvergenceCenter for these total strangers with seven phone lines and Internet access on the spot. “We named the space Transcendence,” said Reinsborough, “an incredible place of calm in the middle of a police state.

Hooked on street protest, Hale went costume shopping.  An Army General’s uniform seemed perfect, and when the Republican National Convention hit New York City, he tucked his long hair under a hat, painted a sign that said “Peace!” on one side and “World – We’re Sorry!” on the other and stood silently, “acting like a fucking pissed off army guy” among the thousands that had gathered.Â

Ed Hale The General

Getting Religion

Raised Catholic by his single mom as she moved him and his brother from town to town in pursuit of work, Hale said, “I lived in sixteen towns before I was eleven.”  Now, he explains, “I’m not a believer but I like going to church.”  Church is just another place to soak up the nectar of life.  “Most people write off religion.  Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. My soul believes in God, but I don’t, ya know? It’s weird.”

His latest focus is the all-black Abyssinian Baptist
Church in Harlem, where he recently inquired about membership, mainly to avoid having to stand in line with the other white people who come from all over the world to visit the house of worship listed in Frommer’s guides in every language. Emerging from a recent service on a cold winter day, he sums it up: “It gives me juice.”

Transcendent Television

But getting juiced up in Harlem isn’t enough.  When it comes down to it, Hale’s better at squeezing his own juice than drinking up others’.  An idea sprang out of his time with the protest organizers in

Miami, where he was inspired to organize an impromptu roundtable discussion with all the activist leaders present.  He found a filmmaker to record the session, with the idea of posting it on his website Transcendent Television for fans to experience.  Then he thought, why not do more of this?  Why not take it to television?

For example, what would a rock singer and an Episcopalian Bishop have to talk about? Hale spent a year and a half getting the runaround before he finally landed an interview with the controversial Bishop John Shelby Spong (best-selling author of the book, Why Christians Must Change Or Die).  With cameras rolling, Hale and the Bishop ended up talking for five hours in the study of Spong’s New Jersey home, where they covered everything from the state of religion to Hale’s personal theories.  (Done with the “Age of Technology,” Hale claims, the “Age of Personal Expression” is next, and with it will come complete human evolution, where mankind becomes humankind.  “That’s where we are now, the Personal Expression Age. But who am I to name an age?” he asks with a laugh, but it’s not necessarily a rhetorical question.)

While the Spong interview was years in the making, Ed Hale is just as likely to have as intense a conversation for just as long at, say, a café on the Upper West Side on a Sunday afternoon, where he recently befriended a Metropolitan Opera singer.  Kevin Chap, CEO of Polar Productions, describes Hale as a “true social butterfly.  It wears off on the people around him.”Â

Chap and Hale are transforming the recorded interviews into a pilot for Transcendent Television, which Hale describes as reality TV meets talk show.  Chap calls it: “A look at life from the other point of view.”Â

Whether a studio like 20th Century Fox is willing to pick up a reality television show with people talking, as opposed to undergoing radical plastic surgery or eating worms, has yet to be determined.  Chap said, “Ed likes to see the best in human nature. He wanted to bring the hopefulness of humanity back into reality television, but the reality TV business is not necessarily based on that concept. Would people rather watch a baby being born or a car accident?  Unfortunately, it’s usually the car accident. Transcendent Television is a brilliant idea though. We will see.”

The Seeking Continues

But for all the flash that Hale portrays – the glossy albums with young naked women, the sunglasses after the sun’s gone down, dropping up to a grand on clothing a week – Chap considers Hale “a stubborn headstrong artist” unwilling to sell out.  In an Ink19 review of Rise and Shine, Transcendence’s first album, Hale is accused of just the opposite: “Hale…seems to admit that his brand of cross-cultural consciousness is nothing more than a way to buy hipster credentials and corporate consumer satisfaction.”  But Chap contends, “Ed would rather take a loss than compromise his artistic concept.”  Whether he is more pure to art than image is hard to tell.  “Prostituting my integrity to secure this false celebrity,” he sings on “Bored” from the band’s latest album, Nothing is cohesive.

But really, most people don’t turn seeking into a lifelong quest.  Most are quite content to do what needs to be done, settle down to quiet lives (Thoreau would say of quiet desperation) filled with simple pleasures and pastimes.  When asked what the meaning of life is, they just shrug or refer to whatever particular religion they belong to for a convenient answer.Â

Maybe The Transcendence Diaries, Hale’s online blog written under the rubric of The Adventures of Fishy is more honest than Hale intended, when he writes, “Still finding myself obsessed with a quiet secret subtle and almost constant gnawing at my insides about the unbearable sadness of how impermanent everything is. Our lifetimes are short here. I remind myself that it is up to me to find meaning while I am here. I try to live my life to its fullest and even then I cannot shake the deep underlying knowing that they are all just moments lived and then soon forgotten. Where is the meaning in that?”

NEW YORKERS REACT TO BUSH’S RE-ELECTION

ed-hale-on-bush-metro.bmp
A cold day in November, 2004. Dasher and I were supposed to be filming an episode of Transcendent Television. But it was dificult to maintain focus. During the filiming of me casting my vote in that year’s presidential elections, I had commented to a camera man, on camera no less, who i thought would win. I casually replied “C’mon man.” “Well what if Bush wins?” he asked me. “It’s not going to happen,” I responded. How could it? I mean, serioulsy. How could it even be close? Didn’t most of the country watch the debates? Certainly that would have been the final nail in the coffin of this dark season of Howdy Doody gone mad, this shameless lame duck masquerading as a president. Reputation and even actions aside, surely the debates showed how close to mentally challenged the man was, how insincere, how incompetent, how utterly incapable; and more than that certainly it was clear from that point on how sold out he was to the higher powers that be — and not those that reside somewhere near the pearly gates through which at some point we all must pass, but the greedy and sinister dark powers that rest right here on planet earth lurking behind corners, barking orders at men like GW as if they were dogs or children. The results of their demands all in the name of money or oil or other natural resources, or simply more corporate power, and sadly many at the expense of much innocent life, more losses of civil rights and liberties, and far less happiness than we are used to in this great great country of ours.
Surely the debates told the story clearly enough to most american people that Kerry, despite his constant flip-flopping and teetering, would win by a landslide. There was simply no way the people, the people, who are the people? would vote Bush and Cheney back into office again. Perhaps another CEO job for Cheney with some giant insensitive multi-national of avarice. Bush could run another baseball team perhaps or continue his record-setting executions in the great old state of texas for all we cared. We’re Manhattanites. If Texans want to kill each other in record numbers proving once again that the old adage “two wrong don’t make a right” does not apply to the barbarian classes, let them. But for God and Country’s sake get these men out of American government before they destroy every last bit of progress we have made over the last two-hundred years. Â
And so it was thought. So it was hoped. “So what are you going to do if Bush IS re-elected?” the cameraman continued to chide me. I didn’t see it as a possiblity. I had greatly over-estimated the perceptual abilities and the intelligence of my fellow citizens. But i hadn’t a clue. Yet. “I dont know. Probably move to France.” What else could we do? Endure? We had just endured four miserable years. And they were much worse than we ever could have imagined. The Bush Cheney regime had already murdered over three-hundred thousand Iraqi people in cold blood by inititating a fake war on “terror” by attacking an innocent country in broad daylight for all the world to see. I toured the streets of many cities and towns all over the world during those years and was constantly reminded of how truly hated this man was by the people of the world. I was ashamed to be an American when i travelled abroad; not because of anything we did… and surely we have done a lot to be ashamed of over the last five hundred years, but because of what we didn’t do. We allowed a corporate-controlled puppet regime to steal the most sacred office in our government right under our noses and we did nothing about it. Many of the most civilized nations on the earth were more than merely frightened of America now. They were downright disgusted. At its arrogance, its apathy, its insensitivity to the crises it was causing in the middle east; and the potential crises it could cause the rest of the world who lived along its borders.
America that three-hundred million headed monster that looks right into the lens of the world camera and says ‘fuck me, eat me, drink me, buy me’ and without batting an eyelash ends its shallow greedy sexist sales-pitch by saying ‘or I’ll kill you.’ That became the new slogan of the red white and blue. “If you’re not with us then you’re with them.” I believe that was the way GW put it on international television to make it clear that we had all gone truly mad or we’re being held by force against our will, prisoners within the walls of our own once-proud nation. Held captive by a band of renegade theives and killers who looked an awful lot like mainstream middle-american corporate hustlers and used car salesmen. In each and every country that i visited in those four years the first question that i was always asked when i was introduced as an american was inevitably “How do you feel about Bush? How do you deal with Bush being your president? Do a alot of people like him there? How did he become your president?”
What intrigued me the most was how quickly the sentiment changed during those four short years. Travelling abroad as an american once meant being greeted with open arms, with adulation, with envy, with giant smiles and anticipated high fives. Now people in foreign lands seemed to feel sorry for us. We appeared enigmatic to them. Sad, beaten down, defeated, to be pitied. We have an alleged democracy. And yet it was clear to the rest of the civilized world that our democracy had failed us miserably in the stolen election of 2000. “Why didn’t they count all the votes?” people would ask me referring to the cluster-fuck of Florida that sealed our fate. “How can you have a Supervisor of Elections in one of your States who is clearly partisan and who worked as one candidate’s election campaign? Shouldn’t that be illegal? Why did you all allow all those black voters to be denied their right to vote? Shouldn’t you have a revote? We would here,” they would tell me in a cafe or restaurant or bar.
When i hadn’t a reply except to sit there looking dejected and helpless and saddened by our sorry state of electoral affairs they came to quickly realize that we now, American’s of every race color age and religion, are finally experiencing what most of the other great nations of the world have at one point or another in their own countries due to their much longer histories. A totalitarian, nearly facist government thinly disguised as a democratic republic, one without ethics or morals or regard for its people. One without respect for laws, world opinion, human rights, or the seeing eye of the international community. Worse for everyone, one without respect for the truth or concern for human life. Not even the environment got away. So we endured.
But good news and better times were on the horizon. Kerry was certainly still a “company man.” Sold out long ago. But the fact that he was both a war hero and then a war protestor spoke volumes about his character. Could you ask for a better man as president of such a rich and powerful nation? Probably not. At least not then. And we didn’t have time to do so. We needed to get him in regardless of his shaky stand on many of the issues. In time, his character had already proven, he would settle into the issues and make the right decisions. Once all the campaign consultants and yes men and pollsters cashed their checks and fled for the hills, he would start setting things right again. If anything he would make a damn good bandage on the open wound that America had turned into till we found a good surgeon.
Or so we thought. But something insideous transpired that fateful evening. The guerilla regime that had overtaken the white house had run a nasty campaign of childish pranks, hate-filled and jingoistic, sexist, arrogant, deceptive, and most of all ignorant. These thugs were white bread. All the calories without any taste or nutritive value. Instead of showing respect and honor to the man who should be king and then debating him intelligently about the issues, as any real president would do, GW and his frightfully senseless cabal of liars and theives mercilously attacked the quiet contemplative war hero and congressman called Kerry. They chose not to speak of issues, but only of fear and terror.
They used what in philsophy, logic, and debate is known as fallacies of consequence — appealing to false consequences of fear rather than proving any particular point. If their campaign were a doctoral thesis they would have received an F. In a debate they would have been booed by the audience and docked a point and warned not to make the same mistake again. But they did it over and over and over again. To the point where the only issue seemed to be terror. How much terror can we as american people inflict on the world around us so as not to have the same done to us. Let us kill for you so we will not be killed. We will terrorize every country who gets in our way in the name of fighting terror. We cannot tell you who the enemy is, but we will kill every last standing man woman or child until we are sure that they are dead and we are safe. Let us rape this land before our enemies do it first. Fuck the envirmonent, we need the money. Fuck healthcare. If you aren’t wealthy enough to afford it, you’re better off dead. Education? Who needs it? Look at us! We barely speak english and we’re ruling the most poweful nation in the world.
With the flesh and guts of recent victims dangling from their jaws and fresh blood smeared across their smarmy dogged faces they appeared on countless news programs spitting out lies so obvious and blatant that many news shows would ask them to thier faces why they kept lying and then run short segments highlighting them repeating the same words of deceit over and over again to show them how many times they lied: “we beleive Iraq is harboring weapons of mass destruction and terrorists and if we don’t continue our crusade to conquer that land and its people we will be unsafe here in america.” Cheney would stare coldly back into the eyes of the journalists interviewing him and report that he never said anything about Iraq harboring weapons of mass destruction. And then the journalist would replay five to ten different scenes where on different episodes he said just that. As if to say, ’Sir you are the vice president of the united states and therefore out of respect for this office i will not aruge with you about this but rather i will let you argue with yourself. The people have clearly seen that you either have no respect for the truth, or you are simply ignorant of the concept itself. But either way you are a liar and worse yet you are using these lies to kill innocent people in our name.
On and on it went. And by election day 2004 the good kind working people of this great land who huddle in the safe center portion of its belly were so confused that many did indeed cast a vote for the warpig butchers and henchmen of the giant corporate monoliths whose intention it was to eat these same poor people’s children for breakfast or maybe just keep sending them off to fight their battles for them in some foreign country undeserving of yet another attack by the wicked american imperialists. Frightened or just confused? In the end who knows.  But it happened. And america went from pitiable to pitiful to despicable in the eyes of the world community.      Â
So instead of working that day following the election Dasher and I sat in the park. We were speechless. Shocked beyond words. A freind stopped by who was doing a piece about how New Yorkers were responding to the news for a local paper. We spent an hour or so together in mourning. Our camraderie in that moment founded upon a rather sorrowful state of affairs. Less than a year later my friends and I would hear news that one of our own from the high school days had been killed in action in Iraq. He told his family and friends that he volunteered for the marines after the US government announced that there was a clear connection between Iraq and the attacks on 9/11. Even though we tried to explain to him that there was no connection between Iraq and 9/11 he didn’t believe us because he had seen them say it on TV countless times. He felt it was the least he could do. His mother spoke at the funeral and said that the best way for us to “support the troops was to get them the hell out of there because they have no business being there in the first place.” It was the first time I heard applause at a funeral.

Brighten the Corners – Local rockers Transcendence are determined to make it with or without South Florida’s help

Indian summer can be lovely in New York City, but for Ed Hale there was little time to savor the sights. He and his band Transcendence were in town for the annual CMJ Music Marathon. And that found Hale talking up more record industry players than a Jehovah’s Witness who’s been handed a quota.
“New York was amazing for us,” he reports a few days after the show, during a brief respite at the Manhattan apartment where he now resides when he’s not in Miami.
Indeed, it was a busy weekend. On Friday, October 15, Transcendence performed on a seven-band bill at the Acme Underground, playing just before headliner (and comparatively unknown) New Jersey hardcore band Start the End. “We spent most of our time rehearsing … then we played the show and had a bunch of labels there, and we spent another day doing photo shoots and having meetings,” Hale recalls, citing Atlantic, Epic, and Geffen among the companies that came calling.
This routine isn’t new for Hale. Since founding Transcendence in 1999, the band’s chief singer and songwriter has relentlessly multi-tasked on its behalf, gigging by night alongside rotating drummers Ricky Mazzi and Bill Sommer, guitarist Fernando Perdomo, bassist Roger Houdaille, and new pianist Allan Gabay, while taking care of business by day. He also runs the record label TMG that has released Transcendence’s three albums — 2002’s Rise And Shine, last year’s Sleep With You, and the brand new Nothing Is Cohesive. His persistence has resulted in a substantial amount of national attention without any major label backing.
“We decided to start our own label and stop trying to depend on getting a record deal … since we didn’t know if that was ever going to really happen,” explains Hale. “We have indie radio promoters around the country who picked us up after the Sleep With You album charted at number 23 on Billboard’s U.S. Alternative Specialty Show chart. They started calling us.
“Same thing with publicists. They would call up and say, öHey what’s up with this band?’ and then I would pretend to be some big time record company guy on the other end of the phone and cut deals with them on the band’s behalf. They never knew they were speaking to a member of the group.”
“Ed’s a smart guy,” says Sommer. “He treats the business side of the band as a business, which most bands fail to do. He’s on the phone all the time, making contacts, and putting our music into the hands of people that need to hear it.”
Those that have heard Transcendence have taken notice. Two years ago, Rise And Shine helped them win “Best Unsigned Artist of 2002″ in the notable South Florida music competition Big Time Talent Show.

But it was Sleep With You that proved to be the Transcendence album that caught the ears of the rest of the country. “Yes, it’s deluded and occluded, but it still rocks like nothing else out there,” noted the review. The lead single from the album, “Superhero Girl,” received airplay on more than 400 college radio stations, and was featured on the sampler CD in the February issue of CMJ New Music Monthly magazine. The accolades led to a national distribution deal and management contract with Xtreme Music Group, an entertainment company in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is lining up a European tour for Transcendence tentatively scheduled to begin next spring.
Transcendence has long boasted a strong fan base in South Florida, even before its first album was released. “Our CD release party for the Rise And Shine album had over 400 people there,” says Hale. Still, he admits that South Florida’s relatively small rock market frustrates the band.
“The fact that Transcendence is more popular in places like Gainesville and Long Island than their hometown Miami is personally not too surprising,” says Houdaille. “With South Florida’s radio not interested in spinning our single öSuperhero Girl’ and a local music scene which has yet to find audiences, I think the smartest way to go about things is what we are doing … focusing on the rest of the world.”
“Miami has an amazing group of world-class rock talent … but unless a band gets the hell out of there and plays for audiences in the rest of the country, it just isn’t going to happen,” adds Hale. “This was one of the first things the major labels started telling us when they would meet with us. They would tell us that, number one, we weren’t going to find a big enough audience in Miami making the kind of music we wanted to make, and two, that Miami is too far south to be a good touring base … that we needed to get our music out nationally.”
Hale also admits that Transcendence’s musical reach may have thwarted their attempts to connect with a major label. Sleep With You had its quirky Brit rock swagger, revealing a taste for glam-era David Bowie and T. Rex. Then there’s the mind-boggling mix summed up by the title of the new opus, Nothing Is Cohesive, a stunning collision of anthems that cull from Pink Floyd and Supertramp to U2, Coldplay, and Radiohead.
“In Transcendence, you have got a band of five very hyperactive, entirely obsessive, relatively insane guys with a severe case of ADD and an extreme passion for music all running around trying to make sense of everything they are listening to and wanting to create their own personal artistic statements. And so the chances of that translating into any two albums sounding remotely similar is going to be pretty slim,” says Hale.
Undeterred, Transcendence recently hunkered down at Miami’s famed Criteria Studios, laying down tracks for an album targeted for release next year. While Hale claims it will have more focus and even commercial appeal than their previous work, he insists the group will remain true to their muse. Or, as Perdomo puts it, “Look good and sound great.”

ROCK GROUP TRANSCENDENCE RELEASE CLOTHING LINE

New York, NY-10/08/04-The old-school-meets-alternative rock band Transcendence (TMG Records) are making quite a buzz these days with their catchy alt-rock radio smash Superhero Girl, and the flurry of anticipation over their soon to be released CD Nothing is Cohesive. But the band has found a new slant in their rock ‘n’ roll marketing plan; a combination of something old and something new, much like their music. T-Shirts have always been part of the package for a band, only this time you can choose from an entire line of over 20 shirt designs. From their provocative What Can I Do To Sleep With You shirt, taken from the title of their current album Sleep With You, to a politically unnerving camouflage T, lets put it that way, this band knows how to get to the heart of the matter without any fluff.
The band’s flamboyant singer Ed Hale, (who has lately been spotted dressed up as an army general protesting the war in Iraq), says that the Sleep With You shirts are the most popular while the Superhero Girl (the current hit off their new album) shirts are selling faster than the band’s record label can sell them.
This is much more than good marketing by a rock band; it is people standing up for what they believe in. The popularity of the shirts is a good indicator of how the band’s audience feels about the issues that the colorful attire address. Music and politics never did get along very well because musicians have a tendency to tell it like it is rather than beat around the bush or sugar coat anything. The band’s stylish and provocative T-shirts get that point across loud and clear. Get your choice of T-Shirts from Transcendence so you can make a statement and look good doing it, let’s rock!

SINGER ED HALE OPENED HIS SPACE TO FTAA PROTESTERS, AND REALLY CONNECTED.

BY GREG BAKER
Street Magazine
Miami, FL
November 28, 2003
Ed Hale first showed his skill as a musician and songwriter with the Broken Spectacles and has in the new millennium reaffirmed his status as a thoughtful, progressive, top-notch musician fronting culture-blending rock outfit Transcendence. Thanks to him, some FTAA demonstrators enjoyed the use of a media center any politician would be proud to call campaign headquarters.Unbeknownst to police and media, many groups of protesters set up shop in Transcendence headquarters, a two-story building in the Design District. Phone lines were installed, cubicles erected, and laptops were ported after a local musician who knew a protester told Hale that the demonstrators needed housing space. The media liaisons for the various protest groups, whose main purpose was disseminating info to the mainstream media, had been operating out of a downtown ”convergence center,” where space was at a premium.
After seeing this pathetically bare-bones arrangement — a note on one wall listed pens as a necessity — Hale opened his doors. He met and talked with reps from some of the groups — including steelworkers, ecologists, lawyers, and publicists — who would soon be conducting secret meetings to, among other things, prepare for a Wednesday afternoon press conference at
Miami
City Hall.Hale’s biggest contribution to the preparations was probably the hammering he gave the phone company after being told it would take five days for phone lines to be installed in his building. After explaining the purpose of the phones — to create a real media center for people demonstrating — Transcendence HQ had, within a few hours, all the phone lines necessary. And a DSL to boot. (”The lady was so nice. She even gave me her cell number in case I had trouble installing the DSL,” Hale said with a touch of awe.)Their operation up-and-running, the protesters’ City Hall strategy worked. All sorts of media showed up at the event: English- and Spanish-language, print and TV, mainstream and not so. But there were no cops and no problems, even when protesters went into the City Hall building itself, demanding to see a ghost: The invisible Mayor Manny Diaz had supposedly left his office after meeting with Commissioner Angel Gonzalez. (Side note: Has anyone ever actually seen Manny Diaz?)
Transcendence just released a new CD, Sleep With You, and has been working to make it a success. ”Fourteen hour days,” Hale said, describing his recent schedule. ‘Talking to station people, sending out press kits. On Tuesday [November 18] I got an e-mail telling me that we’d [begun receiving airplay] on 100 stations. But I was so absorbed by `The Matrix’ — people putting their lives on the line for what they believe in, people taking action, the way the [demonstrators] worked together, like one person working the phones while another goes to buy food for everyone else, while someone else takes the phone — that I hardly had time to notice.”
‘Spending time with these people and listening to them really opened my eyes. The AFL-CIO guys were so cool, and they were thanking me for letting them use the space, and I’m saying, `No, no, thanks for coming and talking with me.’ Long after the demonstrations, the indie media guys were still here disseminating info. The cops try to spin the media, so it becomes necessary to defend the truth.”
If all the protest groups in the Matrix combined forces — as many did here — the organization would be too much for cops, too much for cities, too much maybe even for George W. If The Matrix were real (and who’s to say it isn’t?), America could become a nation of high moral standards and beneficent behavior.Adam Hurter, a demonstrator who traveled from Massachusetts specifically to denounce the FTAA, said, “The key thing is people coming together and working co-operatively for a world not run by corporations; people who come together with a spirit of hope that we can change the corporate system and who try to build communities to replace the corporate power structure. And we were really interested in connecting with the people of Miami. “Ed Hale made the connection. In more ways than one. And The Matrix grows.”

WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO WORK WITH ED HALE OF TRANSCENDENCE – BY GIL MAGNO

Dear Students, Friends and Readers:
I have started a series of updates to publicize those of my diligent students who are working in their art and who actually have contributed to society in the form of a CD recording or performances that bring joy and entertainment to others. I am very pleased to announce that I now working with Ed Hale of the band Transcendence. As many know, Ed Hale & Transcendence are known worldwide.

A few months ago I reveived a phone call from Ed Hale’s management requesting an appointment for vocal classes. We began on 9/18/01. He was already well known all over the world. He studied until 9/12/02 and graduated from my Courses #1, #2, #3, and half of Course #4 before he eventually moved to New York. I found him to be an unusual individual with an evolved consciousness and a desire for his music to make a difference on the life of this planet.

Even though I have had hundreds of students who will use their voice singing rock, Ed didn’t seem to fit the part. He seemed too developed a being to be a rocker. Then he gave me a copy of his CD, Rise and Shine. I listened to it very carefully and I was flabbergasted. Even though the songs are played in rock style, I could actually hear what he was singing about. It wasn’t just a confusion of noise mixed with rhythm to which the voice was an accompaniment. I fell in love with that CD.
Most rock-and-rollers have no imagination in playing rock. Since most only know three chords and play them infernally loud, the voice becomes a blur; and all this is loved by the nightclub owners, because with the people driven crazy they will buy more and more booze. Ed’s music is not that kind of confusion. You can actually sit down and listen to it with pleasure. Every song is distinct in melodic content. I call it a Concert Rock Band. The band has recorded I believe, seven CDs. You can buy them in stores or order them from CDBaby.com or Amazon.com.
Here’s what Ed Hale had to say about our classes: “Working and studying with Gil Magno is working/connecting with an aligned soul, no pretense, no compromise. He is connected to all highest ideals of man and this comes across in his teaching so you walk away from a lesson with him feeling as though you have come in contact with the highest and best in you. It is pure inspiration that lasts for many days after the lesson ends.”
[Marcus Pan, Legends Magazine]
“The musical group known as Transcendence is a tight-knit collective of some of the most notable musicians from the Miami and New York music scenes who first came together in 2000. The band is known for their reverence for melody, and an often eclectic and sometimes unnerving yet enticing tendency toward stylistic changes. “Smoothing across genres like a skater on ice, Ed Hale and company show amazing songwriting skills throughout Rise and Shine. They have just released a debut on TMG Records that is one I cannot listen to less than twice a week… Fusing such styles as brit-pop, Brazilian, rock, new wave, and classical – among others – Transcendence create a wild array of songs but somehow hold them together with left-field bite.”http://www.transcendence.com
